Graffiti Busting by McCully-Mo‘ili‘ili Neighbors on May 14th

Do something good for your neighborhood?  Meet us on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 8:00 a.m., at the Prince Kuhio Elementary School cafeteria for a Totally Against Graffiti (T.A.G.) Team graffiti paint-out.  Spend Saturday morning with your neighbors and businesses in the McCully-Mo‘ili‘ili area as we paint over graffiti, scrape off stickers, pick up rubbish in public spaces and clean streets.  This would include the Mo‘ili‘ili Neighborhood Park, Crane Park, Ala Wai Park, the pillars beneath the freeway, the bus stops, street lamp poles, etc.  The T.A.G. Team will provide all the tools you’ll need for the morning.

Hawaii Residents Train to Offer Special Care for Disabled in an Emergency

The Pacific Rim International Conference on Disabilities is being held to provide training on emergency preparedness and special care for people with disabilities.

The event is scheduled to take place on Monday, April 18th, at the Hawaii Conference Center.

Graduates of the training program will be recognized at an award ceremony. The ceremony will start at 10:30 a.m.

Guest speakers at the conference include Marcie Roth, the Disability Coordinator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Carol Risley of the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities Executive Director.

Iolani School Host its Annual Fair

Iolani School Host its Annual Fair

Iolani School is having its annual Iolani Fair from Friday, April 15th thru Saturday, April 16th until 10:30 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Paina in Paradise” and marks the 20th anniversary of the event.

The school will commemorate the anniversary with special edition re-usable tote bags that are available for sale. There will also be food booths, entertainment and games to enjoy.

Funds raised at the fair will benefit Iolani School.

Children Enjoy Easter at Market City Shopping Center

Children had the chance to enjoy Easter early at Market City Shopping Center.

The shopping center hosted its annual Easter event on Saturday, April 16th.

Children of all ages were invited to partake in face painting, arts and crafts and making Easter baskets.

The special guest of the day was the Easter bunny, who posed for pictures with children.

Virtual Graduation: Graduation of the Not-So-Distant Future

The University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Education’s (COE) Department of Educational Technology will have its first virtual graduation ceremony at the COE Second Life Island on Friday, May 6th from 5 p.m. thru 7 p.m.

For those wondering, the Second Life Island is a virtual island.  

The virtual graduation will make it possible for all graduates, whether online or on-campus students to graduate together.

The commencement address will be given by the Dean of the College of Education, who will award virtual diplomas to the graduates.

Lively French song wins St. Francis School Christian Music Festival

The class of 2011 delivered a joyous and rousing rendition of "Chantez Alleluia," a French choir number with interactive harmony, to capture top honors at the annual St. Francis School Christian Music Festival on Friday, April 15.

Students from all grade levels as well as faculty, led by head of school Sister Joan of Arc Souza, crowded into the Almeida Student Center to hear a variety of creative performances. Younger members of the audience sat on the bare floor.

While the seniors took a route through Western Europe to earn their prize, the junior class decided to go through Southern Africa. The class of 2012, which will be the last all-female graduating class from St. Francis School, took second place with a dynamic performance of the Zambian folk song, "Bonse Alba." The voices were accompanied by African drums.

Famous Entertainers to Perform at UH Manoa

Tia Carrere and Daniel Ho will perform at the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus on Thursday, April 21st and participate in a discussion on “Debating Culture.”

The event will take place at the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies at the Manoa campus, located at 2645 Dole Street from 6 p.m. thru 8:30 p.m.
