Kalani Boy needs a forever home

Kalani Boy needs a forever home

Kalani Boy came to the Hawaiian Humane Society late last year, scared and timid. He was placed in foster care to give him a chance to overcome his fear and learn to trust people and other dogs and the program is doing wonders.

"Kalani is a lovable, calm, tame and very friendly dog who enjoys cuddling in front of the TV and playing with his ball out in the sun,” his foster family says. “In the beginning he is very shy but once he warms up to you he loves to sleep on your lap.”

The foster family is opening up their Kaneohe home for potential adopters to visit him. Kalani will need a quiet home with a patient family who can slowly build his confidence.

If you are interested in meeting Kalani, please contact Natalie at 356-2217 or nlukashevsky@hawaiianhumane.org describing yourself and your home environment.

Elderly couple in hospital following Wilhelmina Rise fire

An elderly couple in their mid-80's are both in the hospital after their home on Wilhelmina Rise went up in flames.

The fire broke out on the corner of Koko Drive and Paula Drive at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Two men who were working in the area rushed into the home and brought the couple out safely.

"It was amazing. They didn't know her. They just happened to be walking by," neighbor Connie Moore said.

"There were two surveyors working in the area at the time and they were able to go in the house and help rescue and bring them outside," Honolulu Fire Department Spokesman Capt. Gary Lum said.

Neighbors identified the couple as Kenneth and Helen Choy. They say the Choys have lived in the home for at least 50 years.

The man who helped pull Mrs. Choy from the burning home was also hospitalized and treated for smoke inhalation.

Damage to the home has been set at $410,000.

Ruff it up at Canine Game Day

The Hawaiian Humane Society invites pooches and people of all sizes to play and frolic at a free family event, Saturday, May 14 from 10 am to 2 pm at Thomas Square. The event will feature dogs for adoption, doggie games, obstacle courses, fun for kids, great food and the Hawaii Weiner Derby! After a hard day of play, dogs can indulge in the doggie cool down area!

Dogs will be available for adoption on-site.

On Oahu, the Hawaiian Humane Society is the only animal welfare organization that shelters, rescues, adopts and welcomes animals all day, and every day. We protect animals from abuse, find families for homeless pets, and teach children about compassion for animals. As an independent nonprofit that receives no funding from other mainland animal welfare organizations such as HSUS and ASPCA, 100% of donations stays in the islands for the benefit of Hawaii’s animals and people
