Be prepared for Hawai'i bon season and learn how to put on a yukata and tie your own obi! After learning the basics on getting dressed, participants will learn several bon dances from Betty Dela Cuesta, bon dance instructor for the Hawai'i Shin Kobu Kai.

Spend a morning learning about the unique history of Japanese in Hawai‘i. In partnership with the Hawai‘i’s Plantation Village, guests will be guided through a private docent-led tour through the JCCH Okage Sama De historical exhibit and then transported to the Plantation Village for a tour through its outdoor exhibition. Tours start and end at JCCH.

In ancient Japan, beautiful but functional cords made with traditional braiding (kumihimo) adorned kimonos and samurai armor. Learn the fundamentals of traditional kumihimo (Japanese braiding) from kumihimo instructor, Carole Nagano. Participants will learn how to set up the marudai (braiding loom), braid a simple cord, and finish the cord.

'Pal' Eldredge Receives Punahou Alumni Association Award

The Punahou Alumni Association presented Hastings Judd Kauwela “Pal” Eldredge with its highest honor, the “O” in Life Award, on May 16, 2013, at a luncheon on the Punahou School campus. PAA President Bonnie Pang presented Eldredge with the award, which has been given annually since 1954 to an alumnus or alumnae who exemplifies the ideals of service to Punahou School and the Hawai‘i community. Recent awardees include Bob Akinaka, Judy Sheehan Dawson and Warren K.K. Luke.

Co-nominator and close friend Michael Moss highlighted Eldredge’s lifelong commitment to others. “Pal’s been blessed with a very giving heart. For his family, his friends, his students, his players, his music, his Hawaiian culture, his community, Pal is all in,” Moss said. “He’s dedicated his adult life in service to Punahou and the community … and improved the lives of so many others.”

Kaimuki High School staff members honored

The actions of Kaimuki High School staff members saved the life of a colleague and friend and now they are being honored for it.

On Feb. 21, 2013, school security attendant Kawika Chung suffered a cardiac arrest on the Kaimuki High School campus.

Staff members Kevin Yuen, Karen O' Brien, Jon Kawaiaea, and Donna Tajiri (Solomon Soares and Edwin Wells - not present) were presented the Civilian Lifesaver Award by Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell for stepping in to perform CPR to Chung.

Sivan Eckert turned in an animated rendition of "Popular!" from the Broadway hit musical, "Wicked," during  the Hawaii Baptist Academy Spring Choral Concert on Saturday, May 18, at the high school mall.

Eckert was backed up by girls from the Soldiers of Light and the Middle School and Concert choirs.
